Wild Harvesting Bags

I really like the idea of going out into the wilderness and taking what you need and what. Without being greedy of course. I however hated the idea of using plastic bags or over sized totes. So since I have a new found love in crocheting I thought why not make a bag small enough to grab a few things that is friendly to the earth and looks super cute. So, coming soon to the TOSO shop:

And he wanted oreo bottom cupcakes. I always bake him a cake or cupcakes. He prefers them to store bought which is AWESOME. So instead of making them all the same I chose half in chocolate half in vanilla.

So hard to believe he is 13 already. The voice changes are happening. The height. The hair growth. It is fantastic to see, but at the same time I miss the little baby that depended on me for everything. As he gets older my desire for more gets stronger. *sigh*

Stress & Crafting

I am really trying my best to meet my personal store re-launch deadline. Home responsibilities, and the people next door are making this process difficult. I find things that are normal easy to be seem to be horribly difficult. Constant headaches. Off and on crying. I do not want to let stress steer me off course but, I just do not know if I can accomplish what I want. It is frustrating beyond belief.

Has anyone else dealt with this? How did you handle it/fix it?

The Fantastic Aloe

I love aloe. I refuse to live anywhere without an aloe plant. There is such a wide range of uses. Aiding in weight loss, acne, burns, scars, are just some of the many uses. Aloe are very easy to grow and are long lasting. I don't even remember how old big momma is but she has produced loads of offspring that have been sold and given to friends. I do not want to focus so much on her medicinal uses, instead I will focus on the care. However I have included a couple links for more information concerning Aloe Vera.

Container Aloe
Since I live in an apartment, my aloe has always been in a pot. She was purchased from a store but the toxins have long since left her system (I will go into this another time). Recently I have had her in nothing but soil and some pebbles to provide some drainage but I know she is not producing as much as she used to so I will be changing her home. Aloes do not require lots of water or nit-picking. They just need sun, room to grow and soil with great drainage. The best I have found for aloe over the years is a 50/50 mix of sand and soil.

I use sand that is used for kids play areas. I noticed less toxins in this and I can buy in large amounts. I make my soil moist prior to adding the sand (I keep my soil in rubbermaid containers because I found it keeps them moist, like you just bought it from the store. No dried out begging for water soil here!), I noticed that when I go to add water later I do not over water. Just mix the sand and soil, no special mixing technique. Just mix. Just drop your aloe in a hole, not too deep, they do not grow deep roots (in containers from my experience). Just make sure it is down enough to stand up on its own. If you need to you can use a stick or spike of some nature to assistant, and remove once aloe is steady in its new home.

Trimming Aloe
Sometimes the aloe gets too happy and needs to be trimmed down. I do this when the aloe reaches a certain height because balcony space in limited. Trimming an aloe is MUCH MUCH easier than you think. I suggest laying down some paper or cloth to catch the dirt and dripping from the aloe as you trim. All you need to do is remove from the pot, and lay down. Make sure you have a sharp knife near by. Bread knife works great by the way. Make sure the soil is moist when it is time to trim. If it is dry, water lightly and trim the next day.

Decide how much you want to cut. If you need to remove leaves do so by gripping tightly (wear gloves if need be. I am used to it) pull each leaf downward, it will just peel off.

Once you have the leaves peeled off you will see lovely fresh skin. Now do not freak out. Chop off the amount you need or want gone. Do not worry about the roots, it will re-root very quickly. Toss the cut piece in the compost or try planting it and see if that will sprout. Do not water until your soil is bone dry. In my experience of trimming, I noticed my plant rooted quicker when the soil was moist and I waited to water. Why I do not know. These are hardy plants so do not be fearful of causing too much damage.

That is that! Trimmed aloe ready to produce more pups. IF your aloe is not producing check your soil. If conditions are not where they'd like them to be they will go dormant until they feel their space is set up properly. Also colder climates may have some issues with aloe. Make sure you keep them in sun or a warm room. They will grow indoors. Just remember moist not wet soil with proper drainage and warmth. That is all there is to it.

Now that you have trimmed your aloe, place back into its pot (DO NOT WATER) Leave it for a couple days. When the soil is dry (stick your finger in, never gauge by the surface), then add water. It is best to use container that allow you to water underneath. Remember its the roots that like water when it comes to plants. Some like to be sprayed but having a soil surface that is too wet can cause mildew and other issues. Always check by stinking your finger into the soil.

I will be coming back. I miss blogging. I have just been so busy with other things, but I need to go back to simplicity. So as I simplify my home and business, I will slowly be returning to blogging.

I will have to say what you will never see here. You will never see ads. I am a completely ad free blog. No getting around it. I may promote another blog or partake in a contest a small business owner is having, I will never bombard you with ads. I feel tvs and newspapers and other sites do that enough. I am not bothered by others that do this. I personally will not.

My reason for this statement is because I recently received and email stating I can drum up more traffic if I add company ads to my blog. To that person, thank you for your concern.

Vanilla & Chocolate Hazelnut Cupcakes

This is my spawn's creation and I am so proud of him!
He followed the following recipe (*'s mark the changes for the chocolate hazelnut addition)

Vanilla Cupcakes:
1/2 cup (113 grams) unsalted butter, room temperature
2/3 cup (130 grams) granulated white sugar
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Zest of 1 large lemon (optional)
1 1/2 cups (195 grams) all purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup (60 ml) milk

*Seperate 1cup of batter and mix in 1/4cup chocolate hazelnut powder (we use this)*

Buttercream Frosting:
2 cups (230 grams) confectioners sugar (icing or powdered sugar), sifted
1/2 cup (113 grams) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 tablespoons milk or light cream

Vanilla Cupcakes: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C) and line 12 muffin cups with paper liners.

In the bowl of your electric mixer, or with a hand mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the vanilla extract and lemon zest.

In a separate bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

With the mixer on low speed, alternately add the flour mixture and milk, in three additions, beginning and ending with the flour. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.

Evenly fill the muffin cups with the batter, *add about 1tblsp of cocoa batter and swirl around* and bake for about 18-20 minutes or until nicely browned and a toothpick inserted into a cupcake comes out clean. Remove from oven and place on a wire rack to cool. Once the cupcakes have completely cooled, frost with icing. If you want flat topped cupcakes then slice off the dome of each cupcake, with a sharp knife, before frosting. If you want to pipe the frosting, I like to use a large Wilton 1M star decorating tip.

For the Frosting: In an electric mixer, or with a hand mixer, cream the butter until smooth and well blended. Add the vanilla extract. With the mixer on low speed, gradually beat in the sugar. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the milk and beat on high speed until frosting is light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes). Add a little more milk or sugar, if needed. Tint the frosting with desired food color (I use the paste food coloring that is available at cake decorating stores and party stores).

Makes about 12 cupcakes

First up when have Peek A Boo: Also known as Boo plus two. You must pay this lovely woman a visit. She is just a doll and her family (kids: Autumn and Parker, hubs: Doug) is just as adorable. She recently moved and got some little pugs and is quite active on facebook! Stop by and pay her a visit, tell her I said hi and giggle along with some funny posts.

Second we have a site I came across just a short time ago: The Secret Stitch Club. I adore this site. This is the site I saw the picture frame dry erase boards and have been hooked on this site since. They have some great tutorials for various projects. I do love projects. What I like most is this is not a solo blog. It is a group of folks that bonded over a love of aprons (who can blame them!) and are still going strong.

Last but least we have Rants from Mommyland. All I can say is ROFLMAO! This site is not only informative but it is like a release for us mommy's. Don't worry if there is something on your mind. I guarantee at some point they talked about it good and bad. If they haven't give them some time they will!

diy dry erase boards

I came across a site not too long ago that showed how to re-purpose picture frames for dry erase boards. I personal love this because some dry erase boards over time won't erase completely unless you use those mr.clean pad things that seem to clean everything. Those freak me out by the way. I still have yet to find out what they are made of... o.O Anyway here is the site, and below are a couple snapshots of 2 I did. Didn't take long. I made it simple because I plan on adding some fabric flowers to the small one in the kitchen and some more feathers to the one in my spawns room. I chose brown packing paper because well its simple. I like simple. If I come across some awesome fabric or paper (upcycled of course) then I can just switch it out.

You will need:
Glue, Tape or Hot Glue Gun
Fabric or Wrapping Paper
Any frame of your choosing
Scissors (if you need to trim stuff down)
Creativity

Once you combine this you get:

Kids aren't supposed to write...

That is the impression I get lately. When doing a search for penpals (which I am assuming is called that as a short way of saying penmanship pals, but who knows) if some of the sites were "valid" they charged you or were EMAIL PENPALS. Ok I get the desire to lower the use of paper and trees. I get it I do. But you know what they make recycled paper, and you can make your own. Not to get off topic...

Other sites were disguised as penpals sites but in reality was a dating or"hookup" site for adults. Especially the military ones. Are children NOT supposed to write anymore? Are they supposed to be so glued to the computer that don't know how to write a simple thank you note or a short letter befriending someone from around the world. Are they only supposed to be able to write ABC but not make REAL sentences with them?

Annoying search today that is for sure. I am in deep thought on creating my own penpal program. FOR FREE....FOR KIDS! Maybe for parents to connect with other parents especially those that may be ill. Let's be honest. Nothing will ever beat a nice heartfelt hand written card just for the heck of it.

Death of a garden...

So my plants are all on their last legs. Well was. I had to uproot everything and toss it. Some may say use them in a compost. I can't. Some have blight. Some are infested with pre-moth critters. Plus I don't have a compost at the moment. I am dying to get this:

But it will take a min. I have other things I want to get. Back to the topic at hand. Other problems that ruined my plants was the heat. It came hard and fast. No amount of watering could help them. I am sad. Discouraged. Disappointed. I will try again later in the year with seedlings maybe. I am not sure. I am going to be much more serious and take lots of notes and make lots of plans. Even though it is just a balcony garden it will prepare me for the future when I have a farm. And I will. Somehow I will. So the soil will be getting some worm castings soil mixed with it and it will be set aside until I am ready to use it again. *sigh* RIP Dear Garden Dreams.

Mini Compost - The Creation

After reading this post Cascadian Farms made on a DIY compost for kids. The spawn and I had to try it. So we saved some banana peels and lettuce. Saved the sunchips bag (it's biodegradable now) and used some shredded paper and left over hamster cage untreated pine chips. I couldn't find a container that was clear and I refuse to buy something just for this. (How does that teach recycle, reuse, reduce?!?) So I waited until the apple juice container was empty (the spawn loves the apples what can I say).

Once all that was saved and collected and all that jazz we began!
I didn't think he'd be that excited but boy was he. He made a chart to mark what was put in when so we can remember the different layers. Added a lil water, shook it up and voila time for sun!!!

Granted won't see much of anything for a week or two but it is ok. It is a beginning step in his understand of bettering the earth and the benefits of homemade compost. Once this is all done we'll add it to my bucket o' dirt (huge rubbermaid container I store soil in, keeps it moist and healthy and lovely!) In time I intend on getting a worm compost. I think this first step is a great thing for both of us. I hope you all try it with your kids, grand kids, friends kids, or random children you grab (I wouldn't suggest this the law seems to frown on this sort of thing).

Can I just say WOW. My view on things have changed. I will still research more because I can't just take a movie or w/e word on things. I still need to take the conscious choice to teach myself wtf is going on. But this is a MUST SEE if you haven't already.

Balcony Farm

I know it's not really a farm but I call it that sense there are animals galore all over my balcony at any given time. The squirrel and I came to an agreement. I leave him/her food he/she leaves my plants alone. ^-^ Any who onto the pics...

1. I use old vitamin or pills bottles and sometimes soda bottles as irrigation of sorts. I clean with vinegar and lots of hot water then poke holes at random all around. I bury them so they have a couple of inches of top showing. Then fill with water. That's it. I add water about once a week. Seems to be working well because the roots get water like they need without the soil getting all moldy from top watering.

2. I reuse boxes lined with plastic bags or rubbermaid containers. My soil seems to love the rubbermaid. I drilled holes in the bottom for air circulation but not big enough it entices ants to make a new home. My soil stays at a nice moistness but not WET. Everytime I open the container is smells so nice. I hope to start a compost of sorts with it and grow my own black gold.

3. You may seem some small sticks in some of the plants. I use that for extra stability on plants with thin stems. Once they have grown enough and show they aren't going to flop over from weakness I take them off so they aren't that dependent.

4. The wires you see on the longer planters are for makeshift greenhouses. I cover them with a opaque plastic bag I cut when it rains too much or its just too hot. It also worked well as the starting home when it was cold. Great for starting seedlings. But more than anything I wanted to protect the sprouts from the hard heavy rain drops. It also freaks out the birds who don't like landing on it. (Bonus)

I am starting small. Once I get the hang of it I will be looking into raised beds to line and take up 75% of the balcony. It isn't big but its length it was seems to make things a little easier.

I personally love them. Like many I have wanted a set for awhile but finding what really works for you is hard. I came across this via a blog by the darling Boo...check her out! And I have such a love for all things wood. I'd live in a tree if I could. So when I saw Mother Moon was giving a set away I couldn't help but include myself in this drawing. {yummy and cheap beef stew}

Yummy & Cheap Stew

1 - 2 lbs of meat {i used london chuck roast or something rather , it was on sale}
4-5 potatoes {i prefer yukon golds but use what you like}
3-4 carrots
1 large onion
4 smashed garlic cloves
4 small - med yellow squash
flour
oil
sage
basil
salt & pepper
1 can beef broth
1 can veggie broth

{total cost was about $10 and filled 3 pasta sauce jars + 3 bowls for dinner, each jar holds about 2-3 bowls worth}

1. Heat the oil. While it is heating chop up your beef, coat with salt & pepper then dust with flour. Chop up onion. Smash garlic.

2. In sets fry all sides of beef. Once it is done set it aside.

3. In the same pot cook your onions. Once they are half cooked add beef back and a little water. {just a little and put lid on to somewhat steam and keep moisture in.}

4.Chop up squash, carrots and potatoes. Add carrots and potatoes to pot.

5. Add beef broth, veggie broth, and 2 cans of water.

6. Let these cook for 30mins. Then add basil and sage {rosemary is nice too}

7. Let cook another 30mins then add squash, more salt and pepper if needed.

8. Let it cook for another 1 hour on med-low heat. Why so long? The beef just falls apart in your mouth as it cooks. Keep the lid on, the steam also cooks it and keeps things moist and just makes the meat crumble.

9. Once it is done pour your bowls then quickly pour into jars. Add the lids {clean jars and lids please} and stick in the fridge. Little trick I learned. The jars will reseal themselves. My potato soup is still in the fridge {not freezer} and is still fresh {I opened a jar yesterday}.

Enjoy! This is also AWESOME with lentils and/or barley!!

European Children Better Protected than US Children: An Outrage

Did you know that Kraft Macaroni and Cheese is formulated differently in Europe than that in the U.S.? This fact recently surfaced while I was doing an investigative search, I was livid!
I’ve been teaching, lecturing, and reporting about the dangers of food additives for over 15 years, and to think that other countries have been successful in forcing manufacturers to remove harmful ingredients, and in the U.S. we haven’t been, is mind-boggling.
In 2008, Kraft removed artificial colorings, like yellow#5 and chemical sweeteners like aspartame, from the products they distribute in Europe, Australia, and other developed countries. This occurred due to consumer concern over the scientific link of these synthetic ingredients to hyperactivity and asthma in children, and a myriad of other health disorders too numerous to mention in this context – why hasn’t the U.S. done the same?...{continued here}

So I couldn't find my cat the other day and I was going nuts. I look at the dying plant (now dead because we had to bring it indoors) and low and behold! A Kitteh!! Yes a rubbermaid container. I use them for the sweet potato and regular potato plants. It has enough room for them to go down and grow. Heavy but works wonders!

Clothes Pin Bats curiosity of Martha Stewart. I love this things. I have them all over the house with the napkin ghosts. As well as on the evolving Halloweenie Tree (that is what they are currently clipped to in the pics)

I have already started Christmas crafts to put up for sale in a new shop I started at Artfire. I will put up the proper link later. But todays Halloweenie Crafts:

Napkin Ghosts!
Need:
Cheap Napkins (2 per ghost)
String (I use a giant ball of the thin string found by the yarn)
Spray Glue
Glitter (color of your choice, I used white just for a little color)

I so love expo markers to write on glass jars, it wipes off easily after wards for a holiday change!
